Work on a pod car system between Delhi and Gurgaon is expected to start by June 1, Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari said at the inauguration of the Manesar-Palwal section of the Western Peripheral Expressway.

Personal rapid transit, also referred to as podcars, are a public transport mode featuring small automated vehicles operating on a network of specially built guideways, usually hanging electric cars. PRT vehicles are usually sized for individual or small group travel, typically carrying no more than three to six passengers a vehicle, which is why it is compared to a horizontal elevator or a taxi. There are four such systems in the world, the earlier since 1975, in the US.

The Manesar-Palwal section, part of the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway, had been languishing for years, Gadkari said. However the Centre and the government of Haryana had resolved the issues and the 52.3-km section completed in 11 months. Haryana State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation constructed it.

The minister said highway construction had gained speed and “today, we are building about 20 km of roads per day”.

Once the eastern and western peripheral e-ways are ready, traffic congestion in Delhi will come down by 50 per cent, pollution levels will be reduced and the region will have better connectivity.

Pod cars would come up, said Gadkari, along the 12.3 km from the Delhi-Gurgaon border to Sohna Road. He said technology was changing and electrically-run vehicles would reduce pollution. Pod cars would also help reduce road collisions.

The Manesar-Palwal section of the expressway was built at a cost of Rs 458 crore. It is an access controlled, six-lane, divided road. It intersects with the Delhi-Jaipur NH8 near Manesar, the Palwal-Sohna-Rewari NH 919, the Sohna-Nuh-Alwar Road NH 248A and finally joins NH2 near Palwal. It has several underpasses, for people and agricultural vehicles.

Manohar Lal, chief minister of Haryana, said after having four National Highways for so many years, the state had got nine new ones in the past 18 months. He said the Kundli-Palwal section of the expressway would be completed this year.

Gadkari also announced that work on the Dwarka national highway would start soon. And, made announcements on various local road projects.
