Steps to Check Vehicular Pollution

To reduce vehicular pollution across the country, the Government has taken proactive steps to promote environment friendly vehicles which are innovative, ushering in proactive use of natural resources. Bharat Stage IV Fuel Norms have been applicable since the year 2010 in Delhi and NCR and certain cities. The set norms have been mandated in phase wise manners across the country. The Government has notified G.S.R. 643(E), dated 19/08/2015 for introduction of BS- IV fuel throughout the country by the year 2017. Furthermore, steps have been taken by notifying alternate fuels like ethanol, biogas, electric hybrid etc, by amending the Central Motor Vehicle Rules.

To promote use of electric hybrid vehicles in Delhi, Department of Heavy Industry has notified S.O. 830 E dated 25th March, 2015 notifying the scheme for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid and) Electric Vehicles in India FAME. Subsequently, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has notified two notifications i.e. G.S.R. 364 (E) dated 28th May, 2014 for retro fitment of hybrid electric system kit to in-use vehicles and S.O. 1013 (E) dated 15th April, 2015 which specifies the type approval procedure of electric hybrid vehicles. G.S.R. no. 629(E) dated 24.06.2016 have been notified for Retrofitment of hybrid electric vehicles

The Government has issued draft notification number G.S.R. 187(E) dated 19th February 2016, mandating mass emission standard for BS-VI throughout the country w.e.f. 1st April 2020 to bring down emission.

This information was given by Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways, Shri Pon. Radhakrishnan in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
