6290 Indians detained in foreign prisons: Gen VK Singh

Minister of State for External Affairs General (retired) VK Singh has said that there are 6,290 Indian nationals who have been detained in foreign prisons across 72 countries.

Speaking at the Rajya Sabha, Gen Singh on Thursday informed that the largest number of Indians has been detained in Saudi Arabia, with 1,508 people in prison. The other nations where a large number of Indians are in prison are the UAE (785), Nepal (614), the UK (437) and the US (291).

Gen Singh further stated that India has signed bilateral agreements for the transfer of sentenced prisoners with 20 countries to serve their sentences at home, with agreements with the Organisation of American States also signed for the repatriation of Indian prisoners.
