England captain Alastair Cook's failed to star with the bat again as India took control of the first Test against the host's with a record last-wicket partnership of 111 runs.

Opener Cook was bowled off his thigh pad for five runs as England closed on 43-1 in reply to India's 457 at Trent Bridge.

The hosts made a comeback after lunch claiming four wickets for two runs to reduce India to 346-9 following Murali Vijay's 146. But an extraordinary stand of 111, which is India's highest for the 10th wicket against England, between number nine Bhuvneshwar Kumar and number 11 Mohammed Shami put the tourists back in charge, The BBC reported.

Both Kumar and Shami score their maiden Test fifties in their 10th wicket stand of.

Cook failed again to end a run of 24 innings without a century as England took to batting as he missed a ball from Shami down the leg side and it got deflected off his thigh pad and down on to the stumps.

Cook, whose team has lost six of their last seven Tests, has now scored only 606 runs in his last 13 Tests at an average of 24.24.

England seamer Stuart Broad, who finished with impressive figures of 2-53 off 33 overs, said that Cook is going through one of those periods where everything is going against him, but he added that it only takes a dropped catch or a great cover drive to change that.

Meanwhile, for India, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was denied a first Test century outside Asia when he was run out by a direct hit from James Anderson at mid-off for 82 runs, the report added.
