Death toll in Assam militant attack rises to 68

The death toll in yesterday's Bodo militant attack in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts of Assam has now gone up to 68.

Condemning the attack, the all Assam Students Union, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Minority Morcha and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity on Wednesday staged a protest against the killing by the banned outfit National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in Kokrajhar, Sonitpur and Chirang districts.

The protestors raised slogans against the militants and also demanded the state government to control the law and order in the state.

An indefinite curfew has been imposed in five areas of Sonitpur district after the deadly attack.

 

According to reports, the Assam Home Department has instructed all district administrations to remain on alert.

The world heritage site, Manas National Park, has also been closed for three days in a bid to intensify operation against the militants.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh have condemned the attack.

Singh and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi have assured that the Centre and the state will act firmly together

Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju had earlier today said that 50 extra companies of central forces would be mobilized in the state in the aftermath of the attack.
