Five-time champion Serena Williams made a shock Wimbledon exit as she lost to France's Alize Cornet in the third round.

Williams suffered her earliest Wimbledon defeat since 2005 as Cornet, ranked 24th, won 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Court One to claim her second victory of the year over the world number one.

According to the Mirror, it is only the third time in 15 visits that Williams has lost so early in Wimbledon and has not been past the fourth round of a Grand Slam this year.

Cornet, who had never before beaten a top-20 player at a Grand Slam, said that she just cannot believe it, adding that three years ago she could not play on grass as she was so bad, but now she has beaten Williams, the world number one on her own court.

Cornet said that she has to get used to it and focus on the next match because the tournament is not over for her, adding that she is not sure how she did it but just with the heart and the help from the crowd.

On her defeat Williams said that Cornet kept her unforced errors really low.

Williams added that she made a few errors too many, as Cornet was going for her shots.
