The Israeli Defense Ministry has reportedly admitted that they conducted a joint missile test with the U.S. Defense Department over the Mediterranean, which was detected by Russia's Defense Ministry yesterday.

The ministry said that they successfully launched a 'Sparrow Missile' with the U.S. Defense Department at 9:15 a.m. which followed its planned trajectory and the Arrow missile defense system successful detected and tracked the target, though its unknown if the Sparrow was shot down, the New York Daily News reported.

Russian Defense Ministry had spotted 'two ballistic' missiles headed towards the central and eastern Mediterranean and had reported it to President Vladmir Putin, but the source and location of the launch was unknown.

The missile test came at a time of heightened tensions as Israel has been increasingly concerned that it will be drawn into Syria's brutal civil war.

Earlier, President Barack Obama had enlisted two powerful Republican senators to help in his effort to win congressional support to carry out a military strike on Syria.
