Republic Day was celebrated in the Kashmir valley at the Bakshi Stadium amid tight security here on Sunday.

Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats Ali Mohammad Sagar unfurled the tricolour and inspected the parade.

Sagar lauded the people for maintaining peace during the last year. He also said that a record number of tourists visited the valley.

Impressive parades by different schools and armed forces were held on the occasion.

No untoward incident has so far been reported from any part of the valley.

A complete shutdown is being observed across the Kashmir valley on Republic Day.

The shutdown call was given by the hardliner Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, and was supported by a host of separatist groups.

Every year the separatists announce shutdown calls on Republic Day and Independence Day.
