The driver of the Spanish train, which derailed on July 24 killing 79 people, has told an investigating magistrate that he could not understand why he did not apply the brakes in time to prevent the disaster.

According to Fox News, Francisco Jose Garzon Amo said that he cannot explain how he could not see the upcoming disaster.

He further added that the journey was going just fine until the train approached that treacherous turn.

The train had been running at a speed of 192 kph and Garzon activated the brakes seconds before the crash, reducing the speed to 153 kph, the data collected from the black boxes revealed.

Garzon also accepted that he was going far over the speed limit and should have started slowing down several kilometers before he reached the notorious curve.

Earlier, the data from the black box recorders had also shown that Garzon was speaking on the telephone to an official at Renfe, the state-owned railway operator, at the time of the crash.
