Unheralded French golfer Alexander Levy has set a new course record at the Volvo China Open on Friday after firing an incredible 10-under-par 62 to lead at the Genzon Golf Club in Shenzhen.
Levy, who is playing in just his second year on the European Tour, included eight birdies and an eagle in his scintillating 18 holes at the par-72 course, which was the best of his short career.
According to Sport24, 282-ranked Levy, who leads by four shots over Spain's Adrian Otaegui going into Saturday's third round of the 3.2 million-dollar event, attributed the recent success of compatriot Victor Dubuisson as the inspiration for his flawless round, which bettered by one his previous lowest score.
The report mentioned that Dubuisson, who won the Turkish Airlines Open last year, started 2013 at 134th in the world rankings but is now 23rd after following up his Turkey win with three top 10 finishes, including runner-up at the World Match Play Championship.
The report further said that Levy started his play Friday morning by completing the final hole of his first round, which had been suspended because of fading light the previous day, securing a par for a four-under 68.
World number three Henrik Stenson, who was still suffering the effects of flu, is three under after a round of 70, England's Ian Poulter slipped to minus one after a round of 74 while China's Guan Tianlang missed the cut and struggled to a four-over 76, leaving him at plus three to miss the weekend by three shots, the report added.
