Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Friday "strongly condemned" the death of a 19-year-old youngster, son of an Arunachal Pradesh legislator, and said a magisterial inquiry would be initiated into it.
"We strongly condemn this incident. It is very sad. Delhi is a city where people from all over the country come and live together. We should learn to mutually co-exist with each other," Kejriwal told reporters.
In a statement issued earlier, the Delhi government, describing the incident as a "murderous assault", promised to order a magisterial inquiry into the death.
"We are working on ordering a magisterial inquiry into this death, which is not only tragic but raises serious questions on the alleged beating reportedly in public view," said the statement.
Nido Taniam, son of Nido Pavitra, a Congress legislator from Arunachal Pradesh, was allegedly assaulted by shopkeepers in what is being termed as a "racial attack" in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar area Wednesday. He died of his injuries Thursday morning.
Kejriwal also directed Education Minister Manish Sisodia to probe the matter and revert with details.
The Aam Aadmi Party earlier blamed Delhi Police for the death. "The way police picked him up and then again dropped him at the same spot needs to be looked into," said party spokesperson Dilip Pandey.
"Delhi Police will have to take the responsibility to stop such incidents," he said.
