The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure social harmony in the country by checking the activities of Hindutva fringe elements.

The Muslim group said in a statement that people had voted for Modi for development and good governance.

"Modi should rein in the Hindutva fringe elements and should never be oblivious to his basic duty to protect social harmony," the Jamaat chief, Maulana Jalauddin Umri, said here Saturday.

"It is unfortunate that some leaders of the ruling party are issuing communal statements which are vitiating the atmosphere. Communal hatred is being spread which is affecting law and order," he said.

"The latest riots in Vadodara (Gujarat) and in Delhi's Trilokpuri area are the manifestation of this trend," he said.
