Chelsea's 25-million-pound second bid for England forward Wayne Rooney has been rejected, reigning Premier League champions Manchester United said Monday.

It was a quick response, according to a United spokesman.

"A bid was received yesterday (Sunday) and immediately rejected. Our position remains that he is not for sale," he was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Earlier, Chelsea made an initial offer of around 20 million pounds.

The 27-year-old Rooney, who's on top of the transfer targets list of Chelsea's new manager Jose Mourinho, has two years left on his contract with the United.

David Moyes, the United manager, however, has stressed repeatedly that the England striker is not for sale.

Rooney may need to hand in an official transfer request if he is willing to respond to Mourinho's calling.
