Seven people were killed when a plane crashed shortly after taking off from Colombia's northeastern city of Bucaramanga late Wednesday, civil aviation authority reported Thursday.

The Cessna 207, owned by regional Alas de Colombia Airlines, was reported missing until the crash site was discovered Thursday morning in a nearby mountainous area, Xinhua reported.

"All the people on board died at the scene," Freddy Bonilla, of the Civil Aviation Safety Secretariat, said in a statement.

Colombia's Caracol Radio news network reported the plane crashed near the town of Piedecuesta, where local relief agencies recovered the bodies of the four women and three men on board, including pilot Carlos Rueda Clausen, 56, an experienced flier and owner of the airline.

Officials were investigating the cause of the crash, which is believed to have been due to an engine failure.
