The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities to consider using handloom fabric for ceremonial dresses prescribed for occasions like convocations.

The directive has been issued in the light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for handloom revival.

In a letter on July 15, addressed to vice chancellors of all universities, UGC secretary Jaspal S. Sandhu said the prime minister has emphasised the revival of handloom and improving the earnings of the weavers.

The fabric not only formed an integral part of rich Indian culture and heritage, but it also provided livelihood opportunity to lakhs of rural people, Sandhu said.

"Using ceremonial robes, made out of handloom fabrics, would not only give a sense of pride of being Indian but also be more comfortable in the hot and humid weather," the letter said.

"Greater use of handloom garments for apparel would promote the handloom industry in the country," it added.

"Accordingly, all the universities are requested to consider using handloom fabric for ceremonial dresses prescribed for special occasions like convocations. This may also be brought to the notice of the colleges affiliated to your university," it added.
