Former MP and State Secretary of the West Bengal Communist Party of India (CPI) Prabodh Panda died of cardiac arrest on Tuesday at his residence, said party sources.
Panda, 72, was born in a peasant family in West Bengal's East Midnapore district. He was the national President of the All India Kisan Sabha.
The veteran leader, also a three-time MP from Midnapore, was first elected to the Lok Sabha in a by-election in 2001. He was re-elected in 2004 and 2009.
Panda was a long time member of the CPI national council and significantly contributed in formulating the policies on water conservation and management as convenor of the parliamentary forum on the subject.
CPI General Secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy has condoled his death.
