This refers to Nitin Desai's article "Targeting employment" (January 15). The Indian economy is in a bad shape but we cannot expect the government to work wonders overnight. Besides curbing inflation, the Narendra Modi government's top priority should be to improve the country's infrastructure and storage facilities. It is a known fact that despite a bumper harvest, India faces food shortages. The primary reason for this is the lack of proper storage facilities for crops. Consequently, many a times, crops are allowed to rot in the open. The government also needs to improve the movement of crops from one state to another. Another reason for the wastage of crops is that there is no communication among the states. Tourism is also a flourishing sector and with proper maintenance of our heritage sites, we can make this industry a profitable one.
For the country to flourish, both foreign and Indian investment should be encouraged. Moreover, our cumbersome investment procedures should be made easier.
