Student leaders of Aligarh Muslim University have formed an action committee to mobilise public opinion and create awareness on the issue of restoration of the varsity's minority character.
The decision to set up the action committee was taken by AMU student leaders at a meeting on January 30. The committee would start a campaign for building "public opinion and awareness" on the issue, a statement said.
The committee would establish contact with Members of Parliament belonging to all political parties. Besides, it will hold symposia and legal panel discussions with the help of different AMU alumni organisations spread all over the country, its spokesperson said.
The issue of restoration of minority character of AMU is at present pending with the Supreme Court but what has triggered off the protests is the Centre's recent decision to reverse the UPA governments stand of supporting the university in the apex court on this issue.
