Assam football league to kick off from May 29

Assam are going to have their own football premier league to be kicked off from May 29.

Assam Football Association, in association with the Celebrity Management Group, today announced the first season of Assam State Premier League, which will have 12 teams to begin with.

"This will be played in home and away format. At the domestic front, this is the first and only professional football league in India that will be played in this format," Assam Football Association secretary Ankur Dutta said.

The tournament will begin from May 29 and will end on July 25, he added.

"All together 12 teams will be playing this season. There will be a maximum of three overseas players, while at least five players will have to be from the locality. The expense cap per team will be Rs 25 lakh," Dutta said.
 

"This ambitious project will definitely popularise the game in the state," he said.

While two teams are based in Guwahati, one club each are from Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Diphu, Udalguri, Tezpur, Kokrajhar and Gossaigaon.

"These all clubs will organise the home match at a ground of their towns. The prize money will be Rs 25 lakh," Dutta said.
