Taking suo motu cognisance of an alleged attack on a Dalit youth in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has asked the Tamil Nadu Police to submit a report on the incident.

"We have sought a report from the Superintendent Police of Krishnagiri district over the incident. The Commission has written to the officer on Friday," NCSC Chairman P L Punia told PTI.

Asked about further action by the Commission, he said it has sought a convenient date from the Tamil Nadu government to discuss, in detail, about some attacks on persons belonging to Scheduled Caste in the past.

According to news reports, a group of persons allegedly attacked a 20-year-old Dalit youth named Aravindhan during a temple festival at Karuvanur village in Krishnagiri district on March 2.

As per news reports, Aravindhan and one of his relatives went to the temple. Some dominant caste persons used filthy words against them and when they opposed it, the duo were attacked.

The news reports also claimed that one of the attackers had allegedly urinated in Aravindhan's mouth.

The issue also echoed in Parliament on March 19, after Congress member K Suresh raised the issue in the Lok Sabha, which was immediately opposed by AIADMK members.

AIADMK Parliamentary Party Leader P Venugopal had said that an incident of eve teasing was misinterpreted by the media as an attack on a Dalit and added that a few persons have been detained in this regard.
