Passengers of a DEMU train from here to Tiruchirappalli escaped unhurt today after the driver stopped it when a fire broke out in the engine cabin and asked them to get down.

No one was injured in the incident though seats in the coach adjoining the engine were damaged, Railway police said.

Fire and Rescue Service personnel from here rushed to the spot and doused the fire after an hour-long operation.

The driver of the diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) Karur-Tiruchirappalli Passenger train noticed smoke emanating from the engine cabin and stopped the train near Veerarakkiam station, about 10 km from here.

Soon a fire broke out and as he was unable to put it off with the means provided to him, the driver asked the passengers to get down, the police said.

The train later reached Tiruchirappalli, about 70 km from here, at around 12.30 pm, after a delay of more than three hours.

As the railway track was adjacent to the highway, the passengers took buses to reach their destination.
