Four persons have died due to asphyxiation from a suspected methane gas leak inside a coal mine in Assam's Tinsukia district today, police said.

A group of people, allegedly involved in illegal mining at the Lalmati area, about 12 kms from Margherita town, had entered the mine and after sometime started feeling suffocated.

While other members of the group managed to come out, the four, who had gone into the mine first, were choked to death, they said.

On the basis of primary investigations, it seemed that methane gas leak could be the reason behind the deaths but the exact cause was yet to be ascertained, police added.
