Assam Governor P B Acharya today congratulated the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration on taking the initiative to declare the Gangetic River Dolphin as the mascot for the state capital.
"Congratulations to Deputy Commissioner and his team for taking all interests for declaring the Gangetic River Dolphin as the City Animal as its mascot'', Acharya said in a statement today.
The move will help in generating awareness for this protected creature which is on the verge of extinction, he added.

It may be mentioned that Guwahati has become the first city in the country to have its City Animal.
"Good to have a city animal in the form of Gangetic River Dolphin which will create awareness about the mammal which is an important element of Assam's rich and unparalled biodiversity", the Governor added.
He also appealed to people to protect and preserve other endangered animals and birds before they get extinct.
