Prof Nibir Mandal of Jadavpur University has been selected for G D Birla Award Scientific Research for his work in the area of structural geology.
The award, set up by K K Birla Foundation for scientists below the age of 50, carries a cash prize of Rs 1.50 lakh, a statement said.
50-year-old Mandal has made important contributions in the area of structural geology and tectonics, a statement said.
"Mandal's work deals with mainly theoretical and experimental aspects of structural geology and tectonics. He enunciated a theory of particle motion associated with faults undergoing both tranlational and rotational movement," it said.
