With city's only solid waste disposal ground at Dhapa becoming overburdened, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has found a plot at Rajarhat New Town for setting up its second one which will also generate energy.
The KMC has selected an area of about 20 acres in Action Area III of Rajarhat New Town as an alternative site for solid waste disposal to the existing Dhapa ground which has become overburdened, sources at West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO) said today. WBHIDCO is responsible for developing the Rajarhat New Town area.
The WBHIDCO board at its last meeting recently approved the 20 acre site in the periphery of New Town which will be developed by KMC for an innovative "waste to energy" programme, the sources said.
The HIDCO board meeting also decided that an MOU will be signed with KMC and the solid waste of New Town will also be disposed at the same site along with KMC.
The solid waste which will be dumped in the 20 acre site in the periphery of New Town will also generate energy.
The solid waste of Rajarhat is usually dumped at the Mollar Bheri, while the KMC's solid waste is dumped at Dhapa.
About three years back, KMC had started scouting for suitable land for having an alternative dumping ground to the Dhapa which has become overburdened.
