Odisha raises Tactical Unit to face urban terror

With terrorists often striking cities and towns, Odisha government today raised a Special Tactical Unit (STU) to combat terror activities in urban areas.

"A team comprising 28 Special Operation Group jawans trained by the NSG will respond to any such activities in the urban areas of the state," Director General of Police Prakash Mishra here.

The jawans are skilled in all forms of special operations including guerrilla warfare techniques, have been specially trained by the National Security Guard (NSG) to conduct counter insurgency operations and meet any kind of eventuality.

STU is expected to be helpful to counter terror threat in urban areas. Another batch 30 jawans will be inducted in the second phase, Mishra said.
 

Chief Secretary J K Mohapatra flagged off the unit at a special function held at seventh battalion ground here.
