Searing heat swept across Odisha as most parts sizzled under soaring temperature with the state capital of Bhubaneswar turning the hottest place in the state recording 41.7 degrees Celsius.

The capital city, which had recorded a maximum temperature of 37.8 degrees Celsius yesterday, saw sharp rise in the mercury up to 41.7 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological centre here said.

Normal life was affected due to sudden jump in temperature in the city where hot and dry wind continued to blow during the day, preventing many from venturing out.

Elsewhere in the state, the heat wave intensified with Malkangiri recording a maximum temperature of 40.6 degrees Celsius, followed by 40.2 degrees in Bhawanipatna and 40 degrees Celsius at Bolangir as well as Titlagarh, the MeT office said.

In the coal belt of Angul and Talcher, the temperature stood at 39.7 degrees and 39.2 degrees Celsius respectively, while in the industrial zone of Jharsuguda, the mercury touched 39.3 degrees Celsius, it said.
