Dalit and backward class students in the district are facing problems in continuing their studies due to non-payment of scholarships by the Maharashtra Government, an organisation said today.

The Government has not paid scholarships to the Dalit and backward class students in the district for the last year and also the present academic year, Samyak Vidyarthi Andolan (SVA), a student organisation attached to Bharip Bahujan Mahasangha, led by Praksah Ambedkar, the grandson of Babasaheb Ambedkar, said in a statement here today.

Due to this the students are facing severe problems and it has become quite difficult for them to continue their studies, said Sandeep Rahate, District President of SVA.

The issue of admission in the Government-run hostels has also been pending for last several months. Many students have to attend their colleges by travelling from their native places located in far off places. This, too, is adversely affecting their studies, said Rahate.

He urged the Government to tackle the both issues on an urgent basis.

When contacted, District Social Welfare Officer Vinod Mohture admitted that scholarships of the last year and also the current one has not been paid to students.

The last year's scholarship amount will be paid shortly, he said, adding for the current year colleges have not yet submitted the proposals and hence the matter is getting delayed.
