Punjab Congress President Pratap Singh Bajwa today dedicated the re-named Pathankot Cantonment railway station to the people.

On Bajwa's initiative, Chakki Bank railway station here has been renamed as Pathankot Cantonment, according to a party release.

The Gurdaspur MP said this was long standing demand of the local citizens. Located on the bank of Chakki River, the railway station was set up in 1952.

Bajwa said that he would also take up with the Railway Minister another demand of the local people to start Shatabdi express train from Pathankot Cantt to Delhi.

Better facilities would be provided at the Pathankot Cantt railway station he said, adding "The border districts of Punjab require more railway linkage."

Bajwa also reiterated his demand for special industrial package for the border districts of Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur and Fazilka on the pattern of hill states "for the development of this most backward region".

"It would also stop the industry's flight to other states since better concessions would be available within Punjab. However, the SAD-BJP government is opposing my proposal for border areas without offering any tangible logic," he added.
