Social worker Sr Mary Jane passes away

Sister Mary Jane, who has been working in the field of prisoner reform in Goa, passed away today.

She was 75.

Sr Jane breathed her last at her residence in Navelim village, near Margao city, Fr Maverick Fernandes, Director, Caritas Goa, told PTI.

Sr Jane was coordinator of prison ministry of Caritas, a wing of Goa Church, and has been working with prisoners in erstwhile Aguada jail, Colvale Correction Home and Sada Sub Jail over twenty years, he said.

"Mother Jane was truly a great mother to all. Very humble, simple, compassionate, kind and extremely loving," Fr Dominic Savio Fernandes of Don Bosco Society said in a condolence message.
 

Born in Kenya in 1941, Sr Jane had settled at Saligao in Goa since she was six year old.

The Catholic nun was awarded Rajya Mahila Sanman Award by Goa's Directorate of Women and Child Development in the year 2014.

She was training the prisoners on skills like arts and crafts, candle making, baking, clay work, painting, music, computers, sports besides enrolling them in National Open Schools for studies.
