Taking a line different from its party which is opposed to creation of smaller states, a ruling Samajwadi Party MP today supported a separate Bundelkhand state and said he would raise the issue in the coming monsoon session of Parliament.

"Bundelkhand is one of the most backward regions and its development was not possible without creation of a separate state," R K Singh Patel, MP from Banda-Chitrakoot constituency, said in a statement here.

State Reorganisation Committee had recommended separate Bundelkhand state but to no avail, Patel said, adding that he would be raising the demand in the coming session of Parliament.

The SP MP also recalled that a proposal for splitting the state into four states was sent to the Union government by the then BSP government in 2011 but the Centre paid no heed to it.

The SP is against the creation of smaller states and has stated that it would not allow further bifurcation of Uttar Pradesh.
