Environmental activist Sunita Narain and four of her colleagues today approached the Gujarat High Court, seeking quashing of a defamation case against them in a court at Vapi.

United Phosphorus Limited, a Vapi-based company, has filed defamation complaint under the section 500 of IPC against Narain, who is the editor and publisher of the magazine 'Down to Earth' and others, over an article.

Her petition would be heard tomorrow by Justice S G Shah.

Narain, a Padmashri awardee, has also sought to quash a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against her and her colleagues Vibha Varshney, Arnab Pratim Dutta, Sanjeev Kumar Kanchan and Ankur Paliwal, issued by the additional judicial magistrate in Vapi on April 29.

The Vapi court, while issuing the warrant, had directed Ambedkarnagar Police station of New Delhi to produce the accused on June 12.

The company alleges that an article published in the magazine, titled 'Dirty For Ever', misrepresented the facts and damaged its reputation. It also seeks action against the NGO 'Society for Environmental Communication', which publishes the magazine.
