The University Grants Commission (UGC) today directed varsities across the country to implement National Service Scheme (NSS) as an elective subject from the current academic session.

"The HRD ministry, as part of the discussion in 62nd meeting of Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) held in September 2013, has decided to consider making NSS as an elective subject in higher education," UGC said in a written communication to Vice Chancellors of all state and central varsities.

"Now the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) has designed a template of NSS curriculum for introduction of the subject as credit based elective in higher education system," it added.

Some of the components of the curriculum include community mobilisation, shramdan and volunteerism, life competencies, social harmony and integration, yoga, health, hygiene and sanitation among others.
