The Uttar Pradesh Police today rescued 28 turtles, which were stuffed in a jute bag, near the state roadways bus stand here, an official said.
Three persons were sitting near the roadways bus stand with the bag. They were planning to leave for Delhi and Aligarh, Kotwali Police Station in-charge Pankaj Kumar Mishra said.
"On a tip-off, a team arrived at the spot. Seeing the police, the persons fled, leaving the bag containing the 28 turtles behind," he said, adding that the turtles have been handed over to the forest department.
On January 11, in one of the biggest seizures in the country, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force had rescued 6,400 turtles from Amethi and nabbed the kingpin of an inter- state gang involved in smuggling of reptiles.
