Vice Admiral SR Sarma today assumed charge as Director General of Naval Project, Visakhapatnam, from Vice Admiral DM Deshpande in a formal ceremony.
The DGNP undertakes construction of large marine infrastructure works and other technical works of various shore establishments including handling major state-of-art projects such as jetties, marine infrastructure up-gradations, ship lifts, bridges and also enhancing the existing support facilities, stated a naval release.
Sarma was commissioned into the Indian Navy as an Electrical Officer in August 1983. He holds a Master degree in Computer Science and Engineering.

He has held various important appointments in the Navy.
His afloat appointments include tenures onboard frontline warships INS Mysore, INS Krishna, INS Rana and INS Vindhyagiri.
He is a recipient of Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) for his distinguished service.
Prior to his appointment as DGNP, Sarma had served as the Assistant Chief of Material (Information Technology & Systems) at Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy) at New Delhi, as Admiral Superintendent, Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam and Chief Staff Officer (Technical), Eastern Naval Command.
Vice Admiral Deshpande, who was at the helm of affairs at DGNP, Visakhapatnam for last 21 months, is now proceeding to New Delhi to assume duties of the Controller of Warship Production & Acquisitions, Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Navy), the release added.
