For effective management of solid waste, the West Bengal government has decided to provide stationary and mobile solid waste compactor machines to all 125 urban local bodies (ULB) in the state.

A total of 22 stationary compactors with hook-loader and 186 mobile compactors have been procured by the municipal affairs department and provided to the ULBs out of state funds.

The department has already commissioned 150 mobile compactors, of which 100 are now functional.

Rest of the mobile compactors will be functional by end of July, 2016, officials said.

Compactors aid effective and scientific management of solid wastes, particularly for reduction of transport cost and easy movement of solid waste.

It also allows the ULBs to use the dumping ground for a longer period of time by way of reduction of volume of waste and provide hygienic environment to the citizens.

In West Midnapore district, all eight urban local bodies have already been provided with mobile compactors.
