An elderly woman died today when a portion of a building in the Manicktala area of the city collapsed, the police said.
Premananda Karmakar (60), who was sleeping on the ground floor of the building, situated on Narkeldanga North Road, when a portion of its second floor collapsed at around 5PM today, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.
Three fire tenders and personnel from the Disaster Management Group of the Kolkata Police and police personnel from local police station rushed to the spot to bring out those trapped inside, he said.
"Nobody was injured much but our men had a tough time bringing out the elderly woman who was trapped inside the building for quite sometime," he added.
The woman, who was gravely injured because of the collapse, was taken to the Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, he said.
