How Momentum Ventures Turns Business Leaders Into Business Champions

Momentum Ventures has launched its latest business, Alio. An American-centric online travel agent with its sights set on the big players in the industry like Expedia and Priceline, Alio was built from the ground up at Momentum Ventures’ main office in Montreal, Quebec. While many entrepreneurs would be going into this venture blind, Peter Lapointe, the business leader of Alio, had the advantage of working within Momentum Ventures’ winning ecosystem alongside CEO Matt Keezer.
As a result of being built at Momentum Ventures, Alio had access to the years of learning and experience gathered in the building of FlightHub. FlightHub was launched in 2012 and has since become one of the premier online travel agencies in Canada, banking over $1.5 billion in annual sales, employing over 400 people, and serving over 1 million Canadians a year.
In addition to the experience of launching a successful travel site, Keezer says having access to the technical framework of FlightHub gave Alio’s Peter Lapointe a huge advantage, saying “having access to the innards of the FlightHub system not only gave Peter’s developers a framework to explore, but it also led to inspiration for FlightHub’s team as the Alio guys had a lot of valuable advice to help create efficiencies,” adding ”there’s no doubt that creating Alio helped make both businesses stronger.”
One such efficiency that reaped benefits for both businesses was found in the technical backbone of Alio. Alio’s adoption of Amazon Web Services at launch has lead FlightHub to consider and eventually plan to adopt the service. This service will put an end to FlightHub’s dependence on hardware, moving all their computing onto the cloud and creating infinite space for growth thanks to the scalability of Amazon Web Services.
