A federal appeals court on Monday upheld a jury's finding in a civil case that Donald Trump sexually abused a columnist in an upscale department store dressing room in the mid-1990s.
The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals issued a written opinion upholding the USD 5 million award that the Manhattan jury granted to E. Jean Carroll for defamation and sexual abuse.
The longtime magazine columnist had testified at a 2023 trial that Trump turned a friendly encounter in spring 1996 into a violent attack after they playfully entered the store's dressing room.
Trump skipped the trial after repeatedly denying the attack ever happened. But he briefly testified at a followup trial earlier this year that resulted in an USD 83.3 million award. The second trial resulted from comments then-President Trump made in 2019 after Carroll first made the accusations publicly in a memoir.

Mumbai-based Gem Aromatics, a manufacturer of specialty ingredients, has filled its draft papers with Sebi to raise funds through an initial public offer.
The initial public offering (IPO) is a mix of fresh issue of equity shares worth up to Rs 175 crore and an offer for sale (OFS) of up to 89.24 lakh shares each by the promoter and an investor, according to the draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) filed on December 28.
Among promoters, Vipul Parekh will offload 33.96 lakh equity shares, Kaksha Vipul Parekh up to 16.26 lakh shares and Yash Vipul Parekh will sell up to 16.70 lakh shares.
Investor doTERRA Enterprises, Srl will divest up to 22.31 lakh equity shares in the company through the OFS.
The company may consider a pre-IPO placement aggregating up to Rs 35 crore.
Proceeds from the fresh issue will be used by Gem Aromatics for debt repayment and general corporate purposes.

The output of eight key infrastructure sectors slowed down to 4.3 per cent in November 2024 against 7.9 per cent growth registered a year ago, according to official data released on Tuesday.
On a monthly basis, the production growth of these sectors was higher than the 3.7 per cent expansion recorded in October 2024.
In November, production of crude oil and natural gas contracted.
The production growth of coal, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, and electricity moderated to 7.5 per cent, 2.9 per cent, 2 per cent, 4.8 per cent, and 3.8 per cent, respectively, against 10.9 per cent, 12.4 per cent, 3.3 per cent, 9.7 per cent and 5.8 per cent in November last year.
However, cement output rose to 13 per cent in the month under review.
The growth of core sectors -- coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity -- was 4.2 per cent during April-November this fiscal. It was 8.7 per cent in the same period last fiscal.

White-collar hiring activity in December witnessed a 9 per cent increase compared to the same period of the previous year, driven by high-skill and strategic roles, a report said on Thursday.
According to Naukri JobSpeak, the index reached an impressive 2,651 points in December 2024, reflecting a robust 9 per cent year-on-year growth, a promising sign for the year ahead.
Key sectors that were primary growth drivers in December 2024, included AI/ML (36 per cent), Oil and Gas (13 per cent), FMCG (12 per cent) and Healthcare (12 per cent), said the report.
Top metro cities collectively posted a 10 per cent growth as the year came to an end, it added.

A new cyber fraud known as "pig butchering scam" or "investment scam" has emerged, targeting unemployed youths, housewives, students, and needy people who are made to lose large sums of money daily, according to the latest annual report of the Union home ministry.
The report said that cybercriminals have also been using Google services platforms to initiate these crimes.
"Google Advertisement platform provides a convenient facility for targeted advertisement from across the border. This scam, known as 'Pig Butchering Scam' or 'Investment Scam' is a global phenomenon and involves large-scale money laundering and even cyber slavery," it said.
The pig butchering scam, which is believed to have started in China in 2016, targets gullible individuals with whom cyber criminals build trust over time, ultimately convincing them to invest in cryptocurrency or some other lucrative scheme when their money is stolen.
