In a first for Maharashtra, drones will be deployed to monitor illegal fishing along its 720-km coastline beginning January 9, a Fisheries Department official said on Wednesday.
The drones will provide live footage of up to the 12-mile maritime boundary from nine locations across all seven coastal districts.
The official said the streaming data collected by drones will be used to take legal action against unauthorised fishing boats.
He said the drone system will be launched by Minister of State for Fisheries and Ports Nitesh Rane.
"The minister will oversee the system through a live feed from the Fisheries Commissioner's Office. Streaming data collected by these drones will be used as evidence to take legal action against unauthorised fishing boats," the official said.
He said the drone system will bring the entire maritime area of Maharashtra under camera surveillance, helping the government to curb illegal fishing.

The Delhi High Court has set aside an order of the Central Information Commission directing the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to demand information from the phone service provider and give it to a customer under the RTI Act.
Justice Sanjeev Narula said TRAI requesting information from telecom service providers (TSP) was confined to fulfilling its regulatory functions and did not extend to addressing individual grievances or accessing customer-specific information solely for dissemination under the RTI framework.
The high court, in its order, said the CIC's observation requiring a customer to seek redressal before the consumer disputes redressal forum was misplaced and beyond its statutory mandate.

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai police on Wednesday took over the investigation into Torres jewellery firm's multi-crore investment scam, an official said.
The police have registered a case against Platinum Hern Private Limited company, which runs the 'Torres' jewellery brand, and its directors for duping investors for over Rs 13.48 crore by promising attractive returns on their investment in the firm located at Dadar in central Mumbai, he said.  Three top executives of the private jewellery firm -- two of them foreign nationals -- were arrested on Tuesday evening and sent to police custody till January 13.
"Considering the scope of investigation, the case was transferred to the EOW on Wednesday," he said.  Accordingly, a team of EOW officials visited the Shivaji Park police station and collected related documents for the probe. After examining the case-related documents, the EOW team will take the probe ahead, he said.  "The cheating came to light when more than 300 .
