The variant, known as BA.5, is an offshoot of the omicron strain that emerged late last year, and it's believed to be responsible for the vast majority of coronavirus cases in the country.
With this, the national capital's COVID-19 infection tally climbed to 19,47,763 and the death toll to 26,299, the latest bulletin stated.
The department in its daily COVID bulletin said 1,096 people were discharged, taking the total number of recoveries to 39,45,647 till date. Active cases stood at 8,848.
Ahmedabad district reported the highest number of 311 cases in the day in the state, followed by Vadodara with 119 cases, Mehsana 66, and Gandhinagar and Surat with 45 cases each, among others.
Maharashtra on Saturday reported 2,336 new COVID-19 cases and five pandemic-related deaths, taking the state's caseload to 80,32,246 and death toll to 1,48,056, an official said.

Of the 9,488 beds for COVID-19 patients in Delhi hospitals, only 118 were occupied as on Tuesday. Beds at Covid care centres and Covid health centres were lying vacant.

The district administrations were directed to organise camps to provide booster doses to beneficiaries and ensure COVID-appropriate behaviour among people, an official said.
Four of the 38 districts recorded most of the infections with Chennai seeing 607 cases, Chengalpet 306, Coimbatore 165, and Tiruvallur 149 while the rest were spread across other districts.
