A meeting of the House business advisory committee was also held after the day's proceedings, where it was decided to lay the UCC in the form of a legislation in the House and start a debate on it
Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand Assembly session will begin on Monday in Vidhan Bhavan, Dehradun, at 11 am
The state cabinet passed the UCC draft at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at his official residence on Sunday
A special four-day session of the assembly has already been convened from February 5-8 to pass a legislation on the UCC
With the assembly session scheduled from the February 5 the government will now place the bill in the house during the session
The UCC will provide a legal framework for a uniform marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance laws for all citizens irrespective of their religion
Uttarakhand had constituted a panel on the Uniform Civil Code under Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai on May 27, 2022
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand CM Dhami says state to enact UCC soon
A statement by the Chief Minister's office on September 23 last year said, "The Uttarakhand government has extended the tenure of the expert committee for the Uniform Civil Code by four months"
The cabinet approved the recommendations in a meeting under the chairmanship of Dhami
A Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for Uttarakhand was one of the major poll promises made by the BJP in the run-up to the state assembly elections held in 2022
A UCC means having a common law for all citizens of the country that is not based on religion. Personal laws and laws related to inheritance, adoption and succession are to be covered by a common code
The Uniform Civil Code has no relation with any religious practices or marriage customs. It is only related to humanity," Yadav said
The high court had earlier also observed that it "cannot do anything" if the issue has already been decided by the Supreme Court
The petitions said that the country-wide application of UCC would end multiple personal laws promoting tolerance among various groups across the nation
Besides Upadhyay's petition, there are four others petitions as well before the high court , which have contended that India "urgently needs a Uniform Civil Code"
The Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand will be implemented within this year, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said
