Having started in 1922 quite modestly with only three colleges, DU today has as many as 77 affiliated colleges across the national capital and is highly respected as one of the country's premier higher-education institutions. In about 100 years since it was founded, the university has grown from the strength of just 750 students to being one of India’s largest universities with 16 faculties, over 80 academic departments, and more than 700,000 students.

At present, SOL of Delhi University offers BA, BA (Hons), BCom (Hons) at the undergraduate (UG) level and MCom & MA under various disciplines at the postgraduate (PG) level. Reservation of seats in Delhi University
SC/ST reservation at DU: Candidates falling under the scheduled caste (SC) or schedule tribes (ST) categories have a total 22.5 per cent reserved seats for them in Delhi University colleges. Of these, 15 per cent seats are reserved for SCs and 7.5 per cent for STs.
OBC reservation at DU: Candidates under the other backward classes (OBC) category get 27 per cent reserved seats, and a 10 per cent relaxation on marks.
PwD: There is also a reservation of 3 per cent seats for students with 40 per cent disability.
Wards of Armed Force personnel: There also are reserved seats Delhi University colleges for children/widows of officers, folks of armed forces and para-military personnel.
Foreign students: 5 per cent of all seats in various courses at Delhi University are reserved for students from foreign countries. These candidates are required to apply directly to the Foreign Students Advisor at DU.
Sports quota/ECA Students: A maximum of 5 per cent of seats in courses are reserved for students under the sports/ECA quota at all DU colleges.
Kashmiri migrants: Candidates from this category get a 5 per cent reservation, besides a 10 per cent relaxation in the last cut-off marks fixed for admission of students from the general category.
Minorities: Some of the DU colleges that provide 50 per cent reservation seats for certain communities are SGTB Khalsa, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa, Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, Mata Sundri Devi College, St Stephens College, and Jesus and Mary College.
Entrance exams
For admission to some of the undergraduate courses like BCom, BTech, BSc, etc, at Delhi University, candidates have to take an entrance test. However, different academic programmes offered by the University have different exam patterns. For postgraduate courses, there are OMR-based examinations. For merit-based undergraduate courses, however, there are no entrance examinations.
DU application process
The application process for Delhi University undergraduate and postgraduate courses commences in the month of May every year. For the 2019-20 session, the admission process was initially expected to begin from May 20. However, the date was deferred in view of the Lok Sabha elections 2019. Registration for the admission process for undergraduate students began at 8 pm on May 30. The application process for postgraduate courses is likely to begin soon after. The application process for postgraduate courses began on June 3, 2019.
For this year's academic session, National Testing Agency (NTA) is likely to conduct the entrance exams for some of the Delhi University courses.
