What is English Premier League?

English Premier League or just Premier League is the most popular football league and the most-watched sports league in the world. It is the highest level of the English Football League system. 20 clubs are part of the league and they play a total of 38 matches in home and away match format. A system of promotion and relegation is also followed and 3 teams get promoted to Premier League or relegated to the lower league. The English Premier League season runs from August to May.

English Premier League: History

The English Premier League began on February 20, 1992, after clubs in the first division took the decision to break away from the Football League, which was founded in 1888, and take the advantage of lucrative television rights deal on offer. For the 2013-14 season, Sky Sports and BT Group paid 1 billion pound for rights to broadcast all the matches. In 2018, Premier League negotiated a massive $5.96 billion UK television rights deal for a period of three years. Sky Sports, Amazon, and BT Sports pay a total of $1.98 billion per season while the foreign broadcasters pay a combined $1.85 billion per season.

The Premier League is the most-watched sports league in the world, with matches being shown in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion. The average attendance at the stadiums for the 2018-19 season was 38,181. The match day attendance was only second to German league, Bundesliga.  However, the aggregated attendance across all matches over the season is the highest in any league at 14,508,981. The league is ranked second in Europe in the UEFA coefficients of leagues, just behind Spain’s La Liga.

The league boasts of some of the best, toughest and most-valued sports clubs in the world. Starting from Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal to Chelsea, Manchester City, the clubs are household in every continent on earth. The league is considered to be the only football league, which has 5-6 title contenders each season making the league one of the most exciting leagues to watch.
