When is World Standards Day

World Standards Day, also known as International Standards Day, is celebrated on October 14 each year. The day is marked to celebrate the contributions of experts and scientists across the world in developing voluntary standards within standards development organisation such as the International Organisation for Standards (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the importance of standardisation to the global economy among the consumers, regulators and industry.

The date was chosen to mark the first gathering of delegates in 1956 from 25 countries in London who decided to create an international organisation for facilitating standardisation. The ISO was formed a year later in 1947. However, the first World Standards Day was celebrated in 1970.

The theme for the World Standards Day 2020 is “Protecting the planet with standards”.

Why is standardisation important?

The router you are using might be made in India and your smartphone made in China. The chipset inside both your router and smartphone might be imported from Japan. But they all work seamlessly with each other despite being made in different parts of the world. That is only possible because of standardization of frequencies.

We live in a world of rapid globalisation, open markets exporting or importing products from different parts of the world. Standardization is an important tool in facilitating trade. It helps in overcoming the technical challenges we might face in achieving our goals.

The world is going through rapid urbanisation, globalisation along with increasing global population. We are already facing issues of climate change which require new solutions urgently. To face all of these challenges, standardization can play a crucial role in developing new opportunities and solutions to solve the technical challenges. Standardised methods and protocols can help save energy, improve air and water quality, which can have a far reaching impact on the environment.
