Who is Dilip Ghosh?

Dilip Ghosh is an Indian politician from the state of West Bengal. Ghosh, born on August 1, 1964, is the 9th state president of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) Bengal unit. He currently represents Bengal’s Medinipur constituency as the Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha.

Dilip Ghosh's early life

Ghosh was born in the village of Kuliana near Gopiballavpur of West Medinipur district, West Bengal. Born to Bholanath Ghosh and Puspalata Ghosh, he is the second of four sons. After completing his schooling, he did a diploma course in engineering from a polytechnic college in Jhargram, according to the affidavit filed with the Election Commission of India. However, a case was filed in the Calcutta High Court regarding his education claims in the affidavit, which the Court dismissed. The Court said public interest litigations cannot be filed regarding a person’s educational qualifications.  Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Polytechnic, which is the only polytechnic college in the  area, maintains that the BJP leader did not pass the diploma from the college between 1975 and 1990.

Political career

Dilip Ghosh started his political career as a Pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1984. He worked as an assistant to former RSS chief K S Sudarshan and was the in-charge of RSS unit in Andaman & Nicobar Islands from 1999 to 2007. In 2014, Ghosh was loaned to BJP and was made the general secretary of the Bengal unit. Later in 2015, he was appointed as the state president of the party.

His electoral career started in 2016 when he defeated veteran Congress leader Gyan Singh Sohanlal in the Kharagpur Sadar constituency in West Medinipur district in the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections. Sohanlal had won the seat continuously from 1982 to 2011.

His political stock rose further in 2019 when, under his leadership, BJP won 18 Lok Sabha seats out of the 42 in Bengal in the General Elections with a vote share of over 40%. Ghosh became the Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from the Medinipur seat.

Ghosh is infamous for courting controversies. His fortunes could change with the election results of the upcoming 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.
