Who is H D Kumaraswamy?

H D Kumaraswamy is an Indian politician and a senior leader of the Janata Dal (Secular) party. The JD(S) leader won the Karnataka's Mandya constituency's 2024 Lok Sabha elections with 58.34 per cent vote share. While his main opponent Congress candidate Venkataramane Gowda managed to bag 38.85 per cent voting share. He has been appointed as the Union Minister of Heavy Industries under the newly formed regime after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and he also holds the Ministry of Steel portfolio under the new government. He has also served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on two occasions, first from 2006 to 2007 and then from 2018 to 2019. Born on December 16, 1959, in Haradanahalli, Mysore State (now Karnataka), Kumaraswamy comes from a prominent political family. He is the son of H D Deve Gowda, former Prime Minister of India and a significant figure in Indian politics. Kumaraswamy's early education took place in Bangalore, where he completed his pre-university education. He later pursued a degree in Science from National College in Bangalore. Before entering active politics, Kumaraswamy was involved in the film industry as a producer, contributing to several Kannada films.
Education
He completed his Bachelor of Science degree from National College, Jayanagar in Bangalore. Kumaraswamy did his High School studies MES Educational Institution in Bengaluru.
 
Political career
Kumaraswamy's political career began in the late 1990s when he joined the Janata Dal (Secular), a party led by his father, H D Deve Gowda. His entry into politics was marked by his election to the Lok Sabha from the Kanakapura constituency in 1996. He later shifted his focus to state politics and was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Ramanagara constituency. Kumaraswamy's first tenure as Chief Minister of Karnataka began in 2006 following a coalition agreement between the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
 
His administration focused on various developmental initiatives, including infrastructure projects and welfare schemes. However, the coalition government faced challenges, leading to its collapse in 2007 when Kumaraswamy resigned from his position. In 2018, Kumaraswamy became the Chief Minister of Karnataka for the second time after the state assembly elections resulted in a hung assembly.
 
Throughout his political career, Kumaraswamy has been known for his focus on regional issues and his efforts to address the concerns of various communities in Karnataka. His leadership style is often characterized by his hands-on approach and his commitment to implementing policies that directly benefit the people.
