Who are IPL Champions

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a domestic T20 tournament organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). IPL is regarded as one of the best and richest T20 tournaments in the world, recording player participation from almost every cricketing nation. India’s franchise-based tournament is governed by the IPL governing council which belongs under BCCI. In the 13 seasons played so far as many as 13 teams – Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Capitals (Delhi Daredevils), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Rising Pune Supergiants, Gujarat Lions, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Sahara Pune Warriors and Deccan Chargers) – have participated. However, five teams are no longer part of the Indian Premier League at present for varied reasons. Kochi Tuskers Kerala was terminated by BCCI for contractual breach in 2011 while the Deccan Chargers franchise was terminated in 2012 for backing off from its commitments.
 
The Sahara Pune Warriors franchise chose to exit from the India’s marquee cricketing event over franchise valuation agreement with BCCI. CSK and RR were also suspended in 2015 for two years following a betting controversy. However, they were reinstated again in 2018 after serving a two-year ban. In the absence of these franchise, two new franchise Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions were part of IPL fold.
 
Mumbai Indians is the most successful IPL team in league history as it won five titles in 13 editions. MI won its fifth title in IPL 2020 after beating DC in the grand finale.
 
The Chennai-based franchise CSK is the most dominant team in IPL as it reached the playoffs of all the 10 seasons of participation. Chennai Super Kings is the current IPL champions as it defeated two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2021 final by 27 runs.
 
Rajasthan Royals was the first IPL champion and surprised everybody as the team did not has many big names. While former IPL franchise Deccan Chargers has won one title in 2009.
