Who is R Venkataramani?
Senior advocate R Venkataramani was appointed as India’s next Attorney General (AG) on 28 September 2022. He will take office on 1 October 2022 succeeding the incumbent AG KK Venugopal whose term will end on 30 September 2022. Early life
Venkataramani was born on 13 April 1950 in Pondicherry. He studied at the Government Law College, Pondicherry and started practice with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in 1977. He moved to Delhi to practice in the Supreme Court (SC) in 1979 and was designated as a senior advocate by the SC in 1997.
Career
Venkataramani has practised for over four decades at the Apex court and has specialized in the Law of Indirect Taxes, Constitutional law, Human Rights Law, and Civil and Criminal Law. He has represented the Center and several state governments, Universities, and Public Sector Undertakings in major litigations before the Supreme Court and the state High Courts.
He was a member of the South Asian Task Force on Judiciary to submit reports on reforms in institutions, working conditions of judiciary and service etc. inorder to enhance rule of law and legal remedies. He was also a law member of the Planning Commission of India’s ‘Expert Group on Welfare Legislations’ in the year 1990. In the same year, he authored a book called ‘Judgments of Justice O. Chinnappa Reddy.’
Venkataramani has worked with the International Court of Justice on matters on Afro-Asian region. He was reportedly part of a workshop jointly conducted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Commission of Jurists in 2001.
