Who is Sushil Chandra?

Appointed on April 13, 2021, Sushil Chandra is India's 24th Chief Election Commissioner and has been an election commissioner in ECI since 2019. Earlier, he served as the Chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
 
Sushil Chandra belongs to the 1980 batch of the Indian Revenue Service and is also an ex-officio member of the Delimitation Commission since February 18, 2020, looking after the process in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Background
 
Born on May 15, 1957, Chandra did his B.Tech from IIT Roorkee and holds a degree in LLB from DAV College, Dehradun, and has undergone various training at IMF, IIM Bengaluru, and Wharton on management. Before joining the revenue service, he was in the Indian Engineering Service.
 
Sushil Chandra as CBDT Chairman
 
He held several posts in the Income-Tax Department for nearly 39 years and was appointed CBDT Chairman in November 2016.
 
During his tenure as Chairman, he had played an active role in unearthing illegal money often used during Assembly Elections.
 
His contributions are also reflective in systemic changes such as Form 26, which has now become an integral part of essential paperwork.
 
In 2018, Chandra was instrumental in evolving a uniform format of sharing details of all assets and liabilities not mentioned in the affidavits of the candidates and also overseen the implementation of IT applications for facilitating electoral processes.
 
Election Commission
 
In June 2019, he participated in the Presidential Election process of Kazakhstan as an International Election Observer. He was invited to the 18th Cambridge Conference on Electoral Democracy in the Commonwealth Trinity College, Cambridge, UK in July 2019.
 
Chandra would demit office on May 14, 2022. Under him, the Election Commission would hold assembly polls in Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh in 2022.
 
The term of the assemblies of Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, and Punjab ends on various dates in March 2022 and the term of the Uttar Pradesh assembly ends on May 14.
